Ways in which Politics was played – Part 1
In the previous blog we saw –
- what is politics,
- examples of intensions and the series of actions based on such intensions which is collectively called as politics.
- How and why people believe in the narratives built by politicians.
- that the politicians are influencers.
- there is nothing like good-bad, right-wrong, fair-unfair, friendship-enmity, protector-destroyer/apostate, true-false, truth-untruth, ethical-unethical etc
- Only public interest or own interest matters in politics
We also saw many more thing in the previous blog called world politics.
Let’s see the unwritten rules in politics.
These are based on the past experience of the world. These rules are –
- not exclusive list, because it is difficult to calculate and write it. But some are mentioned here which are majorly seen in the past or even currently.
- Not correct or incorrect because nothing is permanent and for someone it may be correct but for another it is cheating/beating/losing/hating etc.
- may sound incorrect or may sound violations of Human rights but have proven the capabilities of governments to achieve any unrealistic targets or intensions.
In each of the blogs of this series, we will discuss one or two unwritten rules of politics or the ways in which politics was played. We will also discuss the ways in which politics was played in the history.
Some Unwritten rules in Politics are –
- Divide and rule –
This is the oldest rule in the politics. In history many dynasties were thrown out of the ruling game and many new came into existence just because of use of this rule.
The rule is simple to understand but difficult to implement. Where ever you want to rule or gain territory access or permanent military base or want to push some other ruler/invader out from that territory, this tactic is used.
The government will interfere and divide the communities between two or more groups based on religion, caste – sub-castes, income, locality etc. Majority division is based on religion because it is easy to give heat to controversies, fights, riots etc. One can madly fight for the religion and castes.
E.g., Great Britain’s main weapon was and probably is ‘divide and rule’.
If they cannot rule at least divide and leave it so the territories and people to fight for ages, centuries. This rule really helped Britishers (Royal family) to rule a fourth of the world and they used to say that “The Sun never sets from the union jack”. This rule also helped French, Dutch, Portuguese, Ottoman empire (today’s Turkey) to gain geopolitical advantage by dividing and ruling the respective areas.
On the contrary, Indian empires always asked people to unite and fight. Whoever has said is right that “United we stand divided we fall”. But at the same time, some empires from India may have failed to follow this rule and break the bone of such central Asian invaders.
By dividing literally and in dirty language means, breaking the people in the groups, put some fiery statements unnecessarily, make controversies, damage the sentiments of one group and let the groups fight between themselves. It is dirties politics even being played since centuries.
Meanwhile, the ruler will support one group by making them fully dependent on the ruler and taking their freedom away and kill other group or break the morale of the other groups so that they will never stand again with the head straight i.e., with courage.
Now rulers have already taken freedom of first group or have gained insider information already, so, break the first group as well, slowly. Then the ruler can rule easily on all the groups together.
Now to unite again there has to be revolution through education. Do not provide education or provide only that education which will be beneficial for ruling country only.
Destroy core values and beliefs from the existing education system. Completely change and recreate the history so that children will pick up only that part which ruler wants the society to adapt.
Slowly, children and societies start believing ruler’s education system which will be beneficial for the ruler again.
There has to be equality for unity; break the equality.
There should be morale and deep confidence that boosts mindset “yes, we can do it in order to unite”; break that morale as well.
There should be monetary support to unite and create; provide that to some elite and wise people, so that they will never try to boost the morale of the common ordinary people.
If nothing is working then kill the few top leaders, hang them in front of others; so that the other people will never try even to wake up and struggle for the freedom.
Taking some people away as a prisoner and keeping them in house arrest or jail for years is another tactic to break the people emotionally inside-out.
If nothing works, kill masses. Example, British governor ordered police to kill people in ‘Jallianwala Baug’. Police literally killed hundreds of innocents, ladies, kids, gents, teenagers, old age people.
Similarly, in 1980s in China, when people started protesting against communism, Chinese president that time orders people to remain at home or face consequences. People did not listen and gathered on road. Chinese government literally drove tanks over people, bombard people; police men started shooting people indiscriminately. Over 3 to 5 hundred thousand people were killed to supress the protest. This type of protest never happened again in China between that day and today.
That’s how divide and rule policy work.
